EV home charging cost

Calculate home charging costs from vehicle consumption, annual mileage and your tariff.

Start with your own tariff, or apply an official EU country reference price. Every other value is an example you can edit.

Your inputs

Enter your tariff in the selected currency. Changing currency does not convert the amount.

10% additional charging energy means grid energy = vehicle energy × 1.10. It is an overhead on vehicle energy, not a loss fraction of grid energy.

How home charging cost is calculated

Vehicle energy = consumption per 100 km × annual distance ÷ 100. Grid energy adds the charging overhead, so grid energy = vehicle energy × (1 + overhead). Cost = grid energy × your tariff.

The charging overhead is not a loss percentage

An overhead of 10% means the grid delivers 1.10 times the energy the car stores: every 100 kWh in the battery costs 110 kWh from the meter. Expressed against the grid energy instead, the same charging session is about 9.1%. Both figures describe one charge; mixing them changes the result.

What the charging cost leaves out

Public charging, charging subscriptions and standing charges, and time-of-use tariffs at home. Cold weather and sustained motorway speeds raise consumption above the figure the car reports, so an annual average is more reliable than a single trip.

Questions this result raises

What does additional charging energy mean exactly?

It is the gap between what the meter supplies and what the battery stores. At 10%, putting 100 kWh into the battery draws 110 kWh from the grid.

Is 10% a figure I should keep?

Charging overhead depends on the onboard charger, the cable and the temperature. The value is an example you can replace with what your own charging sessions show.

Why is grid energy higher than what the car reports?

The car measures the energy it stored; the meter measures the energy it delivered. The difference is what the overhead represents, and it never reaches the battery.

Should I use the official test consumption?

The official figure comes from a controlled test cycle. Real consumption changes with speed, temperature, heating and load, so a personal average produces a more useful estimate.

Does this include public charging or a charging plan?

No. It prices energy from the tariff you enter for charging at home. Public charging and subscription fees are separate costs.
